Dining Rooms

Dining rooms are another part of the Early American country home that can be really fun to create. While there are certain things that kitchens or bathrooms need to have in order to be kitchens or bathrooms, there are less rules to follow in a dining room. There obviously needs to be a table and some chairs, but outside of that the sky is the limit. You can give a dining room whatever feel you want. Some folks prefer a very formal setting; others prefer an extremely casual setting. Either is appropriate, as well as a mix of the two.

The dining area can be combined with the kitchen, or with a family or keeping room. Once again, a hearth is tough to beat in creating a homey, comfortable dining area. Some homeowners create one specifically for the dining room; others borrow the light, warmth, and ambiance from the neighboring kitchen or keeping room hearth. As always, building elements such as hewn beams and wooden floors, primitive painted antique or reproduction furnishings and lighting, and casual, knobby textures in rock, stone, rag rugs, place mats, or napkins help impart the warm, cozy atmosphere that we all enjoy in a dining area.
